Disney Princesses
This weekend I had the pleasure of spending a day with my four-year-old family friend named Ashton. She is a princess. She’s Ariel from The Little Mermaid, to be exact, so, of course, we watched The Little Mermaid. I got to thinking about Ariel’s dress, and that made me think about Princess Jasmine’s clothing, and it went on from there. I know that one of my friend’s parents wouldn’t allow her to watch Aladdin because of the way Princess Jasmine dressed. I’m not very surprised, because she’s practically wearing a bra. Ariel, of course, is a mermaid and is wearing something very much like a bikini top that shows a good deal more skin than I would ever be comfortable showing. These are the only Disney princesses I can think of who show their midriff, but the others are by no means off the hook. I remember that Belle in Beauty and the Beast showed a lot of her upper chest while wearing her beautiful gold gown, and Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Snow White all wore tight-fitting dresses. I have observed that Snow White is the least provocative, but she is also the least attractive, according to me. I am not worried about little girls wanting to dress this way because I never felt like I had to show my tummy in order to be Princess Jasmine or wear only seashells to be a mermaid. It just makes me wonder why these role model princesses are drawn in such a manner.
