This collection of prayers is similar to Rosetti’s Sing Song collection in an opposite sort of way. The themes of the prayers are childish and full of children’s interests, but the wording is more grown up, whereas the themes in Sing Song are grown up and the wording is childish. This is an example of one of the prayers by Thomas B. Pollock:
Jesus, from Thy throne on high,
Far above the bright blue sky,
Look on me with loving eye;
Hear me, Holy Jesus.
Be Thou with me every day,
In my work and in my play,
When I learn and when I pray;
Hear me, Holy Jesus.
I enjoy reading these prayers, but I have an inclination that a five-year-old child would not feel the same way. I think that I am even unique among adults because I greatly enjoy reading children’s books; this is probably because I want to teach kindergarten. The language is simply inappropriate for a children’s book.
