For the Nursery?

Although Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book is a book for children, I wouldn’t read it to my child. There is just too much negativity that I don’t think children should learn about. I wouldn’t like to read the ones about death, especially. The words in many of them are dark enough, but the pictures are what I feel would bother a child the most. The one on page 15 touches me the most:
A baby’s cradle with no baby in it,
A baby’s grave where autumn leaves drop sere;
The sweet soul gathered home to Paradise,
The body waiting there.
I suppose that a child that belongs in a nursery probably wouldn’t understand what this poem says, or else just be bored with it, but I think about my mother and how she lost her first child, and how no child should know that feeling.
